I've been able to photograph this family every year since their oldest child was just starting to walk. We've captured some fantastic images over the years. This one is one of my favorites--mainly because of how it happened. We were taking a walk at Whitefish Dunes, looking for a spectacular spot for photos. (I do hold a commercial photo permit for the state park.) But then this subtle, sweet spot along the trail presented itself, and we stopped to check it out. It was drizzling rain, dark and cloudy, but everything just worked out here. The rustic fence timbers, the piney forest in the background and sandy trail...it made for the perfect setting. We did find other spots, including the spectacular beach. But it's the simple photos that often strike me the most.
